Try On BVLGARI's Octo Finissimo 10th Anniversary Editions

Going back in time, BVLGARI celebrates 10 years of its Octo collection with two Finissimo anniversary editions complete with the first iconic sketches made by product Creation Executive Director Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani.

Renowned for his sketches, BVLGARI’s product creation executive director, Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani, brings new life to the world of haute horlogerie, one line at a time. With only a pencil and paper, he has designed BVLGARI timepieces for over 20 years, with an array of timeless moments such as the Octo Collection—which seamlessly blends together Swiss watchmaking and Italian excellence with its technical prowess, iconic shape and unmistakable monochrome style. Now, to honor the 10th anniversary of the collection, BVLGARI debuts the Octo Finissimo 2022 10th anniversary editions: the Octo Finissimo Automatic and GMT Automatic Chronograph. Paying homage to the collection’s birth, both anniversary editions boast the first pencil sketches made by Stigliani that made way for the entire Octo Finissimo line.

Debuted in 2017, the Octo Finissimo Automatic broke barriers as the thinnest ultrathin watch on the market, with a total thickness of 5.15 mm—home to a movement equipped with a microrotator that measures just 2.23 mm. Following suit, in 2019 the Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT Automatic blazed its own trail with a fifth feat of extreme miniaturization for the thinnest mechanical chronograph with GMT function in watchmaking history at just 3.3 mm thick. Now, the feather-light anniversary models pay tribute to its beginnings with its architectural design elements and one-of-a-kind aesthetic sketches.

“The idea was to come back to our roots and use one of the sketches that we made for the dial,” explains Stigliani. But the transition from paper to dial was no small feat. “It wasn’t easy to do because we had to scan and digitalize the exact sketch that I had made.” He continues, “You have to imagine, for example, the kind of line you need to have to be able to digitize it. Then we have to decide what lines we want, and when it becomes a pixel we have to switch it on and off. After all that, we use the laser to produce a finishing that looks like the pencil on the dial.”

He confesses, “The beginning was definitely not easy—we made several trials to get the structural lines correct. It’s very evident on the sketches because I use markers, but on the dial, the idea was to only have the indexes and the 12, and then after go in with the structural lines, because otherwise we would have too many stokes on the dial.” In the end? “We are very happy with the result,” he says. “It’s such a surprise to me and it’s so personal. I could not have imagined to have a sketch on a dial.”

Equally impressive and distinctly characteristic on its own, the technical characteristics of the timepieces draw inspiration from Italian architecture and BVLGARI’s Roman beginnings. Crafted from ultralight titanium, the case, dial and bracelet showcase a modern-meets-timeless look with sharp, bold lines throughout. The sandblasted finish of the titanium works hand in hand with the black PVD-treated hands, hour markers, logo and seconds counter, allowing Stigliani’s sketches to shine through. Finished with a ceramic-set crown, the 40 mm-diameter case seamlessly flows together with the integrated bracelet composed of supple links, providing comfort and lightness on the wrist. Limited to 200 pieces each, these anniversary editions prove that a collection this extraordinary will only get better with time.
